Hawaii Volcanoes National Park & Kilauea Volcano
Currently Hawaii’s number one visitor attraction, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park encompasses 333,000 acres from sea level to the 13,677-foot summit of Mauna Loa, the planet’s most massive volcano. In addition to Mauna Loa, there is Kilauea Volcano considered one of the world’s most active volcanoes. There are also many rare and endangered native flora and fauna within the park. For native Hawaiians, this a sacred site where homage is paid to Pele, the goddess of volcanoes.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has also been designated as a World Heritage Site (one of 20 in the United States) by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for its cultural value as well as its diversity of geological, biological and botanical wonders. The park is also recognized as an International Biosphere Reserve.
Kilauea Volcano with its dramatic eruptions, spectacular fountains, and mesmerizing lava flows has captivated and awed visitors since January 1983. Spanning over two decades, the lava continues to flow to this day, sometimes visible in molten streams against the cooled black lava, sometimes invisible until it reaches the ocean from beneath a lava crust and explodes in columns of steam.
However on March 11, 2008, Kilauea Volcano took on a new dimension as a majestic plume of steam and gas emerged from its summit at Halema’uma’u Crater. The crater’s last eruption was in 1982. As this exciting volcanic activity evolves, geologists continue to monitor and seek to learn more from this new phase of Kilauea Volcano.
Step back into time and witness creation unfold in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park! To date, Kilauea Volcano has produced over 2 billion cubic yards of lava, covering 8.7 miles of highway as deep as 115 feet and adding over 568 acres (230 hectares) of new land.
